 Pet Surrenders

Before you surrender your pet please consider the following:

Keep your pet and work on problem behaviors.  If you are giving your dog up due to behavior problems, consider contacting the Training Center for a consultation.  Most behavior problems can be significantly reduced or eliminated with professional help.  Check out our Behavioral Assistance page for canine and feline behavioral tips.

If You Have Allergies:  Allergies are mostly caused by animal dander, not their fur!  To help keep dander to a minimum, bathe and brush your pet often.  Vacuum your home and furniture throughly, wash bedding, counters etc. often.  Nutritional supplements are also available to help with skin and coat problems in pets.  Consult with your veterinarian for additional recommendations.

Try to Find a New Home For Your Pet:  Ask friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, or your veterinarian if they might provide a new home for your pet.   Consider contacting a Breed Rescue Group if you own a purebred.  A local rescue group typically has a list of potential adopters.   Be sure to inspect and screen the Breed Rescue group to ensure the best care will be given to your pet.  Post your animal on Petfinder's Post-A-Pet where hundreds of people looking to adopt a pet will see your profile.   Lastly, advertise in the pet section of local newspapers. Be sure to carefully screen potential owners and consider charging a reasonable fee rather than offering your pet "free to a good home".

Surrendering Your Pet

There are many reasons why a family must surrender their pet.  The Monadnock Humane Society is here to assist, if necessary.  Dogs and cats are admitted by appointment only and as space becomes available.  Due to the unpredictable rate of adoptions and available space, the time to admit a dog or cat can vary from a few days to several weeks.  Please plan accordingly if you are moving and cannot take your pet.

Surrenders are admitted by appointment only

Call our Adoption Desk at 603-352-9011 x 101 to schedule your appointment

At the time of your appointment, please bring the following with you:

  • Completed Canine Surrender History Questionnaire (for dogs only).
  • Copy of Vaccination and Medical History
  • If you are not the owner, a signed letter from the owner giving you permission to surrender the dog(s) is required.
  • Any items, such as dog bed, toys, etc. that will ease the transition from your home to shelter.  Note that these items may not be available should you decide to reclaim your dog.
  • Surrender fee, which assists us with the care and medical needs of your pet while at MHS:
    • Current on vaccinations, heartworm and spayed or neutered:  $25
    • Not current on vaccinations, heartworm and/or not spayed or neutered:  $50
    • Emergency surrender:  fee varies
  • Each animal admitted to MHS is evaluated medically and behaviorally for our adoption program. Although we cannot guarantee adoption for any animal, we are proud to have adopted more than 1,500 pets into new homes every year.
