The
Perfect Puppy: How to Raise a Well-behaved Dog
by Gwen Bailey
Whether
you purchase a puppy from a breeder or adopt one from a shelter,
this book is a must-read. Bailey's comprehensive guide to raising,
training and socializing any puppy covers everything from choosing
the right puppy for your family to effective canine discipline.
There is an excellent section on the developmental stages of puppies
that will help owners understand why their puppy is acting the
way s/he is, and how to modify undesirable behaviors. Chapters
five through eight will help experienced and novice owners set
a routine they can live with, resulting in a 'perfect' puppy.
Later chapters focus on games, training, grooming and preventing
aggression. An easy bedside read, this book is an excellent source
of information about raising a puppy to be a happy and well-adjusted
canine companion.
Three
Stories You Can Read to Your Dog
by
Sara Swan Miller, Illustrated by True Kelley
This
book of three stories is written for kids to read to their dogs,
but dog-lovers of any age will recognize it as an instant classic.
Written from a dog's point of view, each story is a fun adventure.
From scaring away "The Burglar" and dreaming of a bone tree, to
the story of a bored house dog turned "Wild Dog" these are great
stories your own dog could have written (if dogs could write,
that is).
One look at the appropriately silly watercolor-and-ink
illustrations is sure to bring a chuckle to anyone who's ever
lived with a dog. This author-illustrator team has a similar book
out for cat people called, (you guessed it):
Three Stories You Can Read to Your Cat.
